Winners include the Kentucky Derby-winning filly Regret (1914), Triple Crown winners Secretariat (1972) and Affirmed (1977), Forty Niner (1987), Tom Fool (1951), Hail To Reason (1960), and Exclusive Native (1967). The Sanford is the source of the greatest horse-racing upset of all time, and the reason it’s called an upset – in 1919, Upset narrowly beat Man o’War in the only race he ever lost.
